Space was a 2D game set in space focused around combining powerups unlocked through combat and exploration. Following the roguelike template, players would start weak and become stronger through powerups collected by exploring and combatting enemies. Depending on which randomly dropped powerups the player collected, their strategies for defeating enemies would need to adjust to take full advantage of the powerups. By end game, players would have their power fantasies fulfilled as they defeated massive amounts of enemies with their assortment of powerups dazzling the screen with destructive and flashy VFX.
The project went through multiple design iterations, often requiring starting over from scratch as the game went in a completely new direction. Ultimately however, Space was never destined to be more than an excercise in the difficulties of game design, acting as a sandbox for excercising the urge to experiment and create games.
This pages serves to document my experiences and to showcase the effort and creativity put into the developement.
